As energy costs are soaring in the UK, homeowners face a dilemma, whether to stay cold in winter or face high energy bills. Energy poverty is a real risk for many households, and sacrificing comfort to maintain financial health is likely a reality for many Britons this winter. But even if the household budget has some room to handle the rising living costs, how many homeowners are willing to pay more for the same service?

Additionally, energy waste in the household can have a huge environmental impact. According to environmental studies, UK homes account for around 15% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions through oil- and gas-powered heating solutions. Alarmingly, the typical British house loses 3°C in hours when the outside temperature hits 0°C, driving the constant heating effort to compensate for the loss. Naturally, Britons seek better insulation options, such as blinds. Do Venetian blinds keep heat in? We consider below the pros and cons of blinds against heat waste.

Can Blinds Keep Heat in?

Do blinds keep heat in? The answer is yes, as long as they meet specific conditions. Indeed, the type of material used to make the blinds plays a significant role in its insulation properties.

Materials with a high R value, the resistance to the heat flow through a given material thickness, provide better insulation. Sturdier materials such as wood tend to have higher R values. In other words, if you opt for blinds as an insulation improvement solution, wooden blinds will be more effective than thinner and lighter materials that let the air through.

Advantages of Wooden Blinds Insulation

Wooden blinds are an elegant addition to your interior style, as they often add a sophisticated touch to the decor. Design is a source of concern when you opt for visible insulation options, such as blinds or curtains, aka elements that are not hidden inside the house structure. Venetian blinds can inject a stylish edge to the room.

Wooden blinds can also provide an effective answer to summer heat, aka heat coming in rather than getting out. Poor insulation can make it difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors in summer, which can lead to an extreme reliance on electric fans or A/C units. High energy costs remain a risk also during the warmer months of the year. Wood is a material that is especially helpful in keeping sunlight at bay and limiting heat penetration in summer, making wooden blinds a hard-working insulating solution all year round.

Wooden blinds are often made from sustainably-sourced material, keeping the environmental impact and residential footprint low. This wouldn’t be the case with synthetic materials, for example.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that wooden blinds are long-lasting and more resistant to shocks, unlike lighter materials. They are a long-term investment in the decor and the property’s energy consumption.

Disadvantages of Wooden Blind Insulation

While Venetian blinds can keep the heat in, they are at their most effective in summer when they keep the heat out. Relying entirely on wooden blinds in a cold region for insulation purposes may not be sufficient to maintain a comfortable temperature at home in winter.

Additionally, the design can lead some of the heat to escape through the gaps between each slat and along the sides of the blinds. Wooden blinds will reduce heat loss, but they are not designed to prevent it completely. Ultimately, we wouldn’t recommend using blinds as a sole insulation system for your home.

Wood Blind Alternatives for Insulation

If you suspect that your windows are the main source of heat loss in winter, it can be a good idea to consider alternative insulating blinds for windows of all sizes.

Wood shutters, such as plantation shutters, can be a great addition to the property. They can be fixed directly to the window frame, essentially blocking the path for the heat to exit. Bear in mind, however, that wood shutters are more expensive than wooden blinds and are not designed to let the light through.

You can also consider the addition of thermal curtains inside the areas with significant drafts. Thermal curtains can deliver effective insulation properties both in winter and summer. Like shutters, they do not let the light through.

Alternatively, it is also worth considering other areas in your home that may let the heat escape. Poor insulation under the roof can lead to up to 30% of your heat loss in winter.

We Sell Wood Blinds that Keep your Heat in!

As a long-term, energy-efficient investment, wooden blinds can elevate your interior while lowering your energy cost. However, they may not be the priority option to regulate the indoor temperature in a poorly insulated property.

At Wood Blinds, we aim to be the leading online expert for Venetian blinds in the UK. Why do our Venetian blinds keep heat in? It’s simple: They are made to measure with high quality and durable material, so you can rest assured they will reduce heat loss as much as possible.

External buildings like sheds or garden rooms don’t tend to get the same level of attention as a room in the home. Outbuildings can be home to a lot of junk and can also house expensive equipment that’s been built up over the years and an external building like a shed or a cabin is unlikely to benefit from the same level of heat because of its location.

For the sake of privacy and to protect your outbuildings from the elements, window blinds are essential. But getting a window blind involves a number of variables, such as the size of the windows. Therefore, it’s likely your blinds will need to be crafted carefully to suit the size and aesthetics of your space, so have a look below for some of our suggestions.

Different Types of Blinds for Outbuildings

Outbuildings need different types of protection. If you’ve got a summer house, cabin, or garden room, some of the following would be perfect:

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are made from one large piece of fabric and allow natural light to filter into a room. This is a particularly common type of blind for offices, so if you are using your outbuilding as an external office this can be perfect.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are a sleek and minimal approach to blinds. The fabric rolls up so they don’t take up as much space as a Roman blind. They can also be customised to create statement pieces.

Wooden and Venetian Blinds

Both are very popular blinds that are either made of real wood blinds, faux wood blinds, aluminium, or PVC. They allow you to adjust the light by tilting the slats in addition to raising the blinds.

While you can get any type of blind for an outbuilding, the different materials and types would have an effect on your decision, but it’s also important to base your decision according to the outbuilding you have.

Blinds for Sheds

A shed can be a very small and delicate space when you are using it to store a lot of items. From bikes to lawnmowers, you will need to use the right type of blind to hide your belongings. For most sheds, a cost-effective blind is an ideal option. Roller blinds are perfect because they’re very versatile for anybody on a budget. Additionally, a Roman blind can be perfect because of its durability.

Blinds for Summer Houses

A summer house is an amazing addition to any garden but you will need to shield prying eyes from the interiors, but also make sure the right blind provides thermal benefits to keep the heat in or out, depending on the season. Pleated blinds are an amazing addition to your summer house because they can maintain privacy and control the sunlight, while also adding to the overall aesthetic. While there are a number of blinds available that can work with your summer house, such as roller blinds, Venetian blinds have that balance between style and substance. Wood Venetian blinds look amazing, but for those on a budget, faux wood is also just as effective.

Blinds for Log Cabins

Log cabins are very similar in feel to a summer house, and having blinds that offer those thermal benefits, adds a layer of style, and protects the items inside is a delicate balance to get right. Pleated blinds are excellent but wood or faux wood Venetians work well because of the aesthetics. In a log cabin environment, wooden materials work perfectly with the overall aesthetics.

Blinds for Garden Rooms

A garden room is a very versatile space, so therefore you can choose almost any blind to fit it. However, it depends on what you are using the garden room for. The garden room can easily be a home office, a bar, or even a sauna. Therefore, a Roman blind is excellent for a bar setup as it can allow natural light to come into a room but also blocks it out depending on your colour choice. It’s an amazing way to lend elegance and sophistication to the space. However, wood and faux wood Venetian blinds are perfect for garden rooms because of their durability. Made of thick materials, they provide extra protection and materials like faux wood and wood are highly customisable. Additionally, for the energy conscious, the materials are perfect for energy efficiency because they do not allow heat to escape.

With so many window blinds available, if you are looking to upgrade your outhouse, there are plenty of options to provide style and practicality.

Wood blinds are a popular choice when it comes to window blinds for many people. They can be fitted in almost any window or door in your home quickly. They have the bonus of being available in lots of different styles, designs and colours, even wood effect finishes if you don’t want the full-on look and feel of wooden blinds in your home. They work straightforwardly; the bottom part is tied to the window with either a cord or chain, depending on your chosen style. There are also various options for operating them, including cord controls, wand operated or even battery operated.

As well as being easy to set up and fit, they are also effortless to maintain. Depending on the material you have chosen, they can be cleaned using a slightly damp soapy cloth or even just a dry dusting cloth.

How Easy Is It To Install Blinds?

Installing your new blinds is very easy, especially if you have a bay window, as they can be fitted to the inside section of the bay, allowing them to fit effectively. They are also available in various sizes, making them perfect for any bay window regardless of how big or small it may be.

To install your blind yourself, all you need to do is measure the size of your window, making sure that you have allowed for play in your blind cord. Then you install the brackets at each corner on the inside of the window frame. The cords are then attached by threading them through all four brackets and attaching them to a cleat or screw hook to tie onto the bottom of the window. You then attach your string to the top of the blind, making sure that you fit this according to the instructions attached with it. Then all you have to do is activate your operating or lifting cord and attach them to a cleat or other device for control.

Step By Step Guide Of Installing Blinds To Your Bay Window

Step 1 – Measurements

The first thing you will need to do is measure your bay window. Keep the tape measure level at all times and allow a good amount of room for gliding if you are going to be fitting a cord operated blind as they can move quite freely. You should also take into account the cord or chain when fitting your blinds, especially if you have a bay window.

Measure the width and depth of the bay, remember to allow for giving in the cord/chain and add an extra 10cm at either side for brackets and any cables crossing them. You will also need to measure both sides so that you can be sure of an exact fit.

Also read: How To Measure Windows For Blinds

Now measure the height of the window, including the depth of the window sill. Note this down so that you can remember it when fitting your brackets.

Now check all your measurements with what is called a ‘cut out size’, which is available on most blinds websites or even in some DIY stores. This is the size of blind that will be needed to fit your window, and if you have taken accurate measurements, you should be fine, but it’s always best to double-check.

Step 2 – Ordering

Once you know your cut out size, you can order your blinds, making sure that they are ordered as bay sized blinds as there is a difference between a normal-sized blind and one designed to fit a bay window.

When your blinds arrive, make sure that you lay them flat somewhere where they will not be crushed. Take your cut out size and trace around it on the front of each blind. Then using either scissors or tin snips, carefully cut around the outside of the shape, making sure that you are putting on the inside of the line.

Step 3 – Fitting

Now you are ready to fit your blinds, take them to the window and remove any old curtains or blinds. Fitting bay sized blinds is very easy as all you have to do is place them into the brackets that you have already installed on your windows frame, then using a pencil, fix the blind to the front of the window; this is done by marking through each fixing point and then using a sharp knife puncture the outside of each hole.

You will find that you have created two holes in either side of your bay sized blind, which line up directly with your brackets. Now simply fix the blinds to these holes. If you fit cord or chain operated blinds, then cords can now be threaded through the top brackets and secured using a cleat; this is usually included with your blinds when purchased. The cords can also be fixed by making holes in your window frame and threading them through these before fixing them to the bottom brackets with a cleat.

Step 4 – Operating

Once you have finished, the blinds will be secure and ready for use. You can now install any operating mechanism such as a cord or chain that you need to attach to the top of your window. Some windows may not require this, though, and it is up to you if you want them fitted with cords or not.

What Are The Easiest Blinds To Fit In A Bay Window?

The easiest blind to fit in a bay window is one that simply slots into place using brackets already fitted to your windows frame. These blinds can also be cord or chain operated for ease of use and are easily operated from the top of the window. They can also be left down and fixed in place permanently if you don’t want to use them often; this may be a consideration if you have young children or pets that might potentially damage the blinds.

It’s important that you do not fit your blinds too tightly to your window frame as this can put undue pressure on the frame itself, which may lead to it becoming damaged.

If you’re planning a redecorating project, you might be considering faux wood blinds. But, this is easier said than done. If you’ve ever used faux wood blinds before, you know that it can be a little tricky to get the right size. Previously, you were required to measure your window, visit the shop, and get your plastic faux wood blinds cut to size for you.

And even this was never a guarantee you’d measured it correctly, meaning a lot of wasted materials and plenty of frustration. However, times have changed, and it’s now easy for anyone to find out how to cut blinds to make their home improvement project a success.

What Is Faux Wood?

Faux wood is a style of plastic wood effect blinds that use polymer materials to mimic the style and appearance of real wood. When it comes to custom fit blinds, this material is easier and more economical compared to custom cut wood, making it an appealing choice for redecorating projects that won’t break the budget.

Also check: Reasons To Buy Faux Wood Blinds

Custom faux wood blinds come in a range of colours to match any decor choice, meaning you can find the right answer no matter what you’re looking for.

How to Cut Blinds to Size

Before you start to ask where can I get blinds cut to size, you should know that you can do it at home! Cutting Venetian blinds is easier than you might expect as long as you have a blind cutting tool.

Before you resize blinds purchased, you must first measure the window width in three places – the top, middle, and bottom. Typically, blinds measure about half an inch less than the frame. We recommend measuring multiple times to get an accurate measurement.

Measure the blinds and mark the required length. It may be easier to cut from just one side, which is opposite to the cords.

Use a wooden blinds cutter to cut the blinds to the right size.

Remove the metal stiffener faux wood blind brackets from the side you are cutting.

Make the blinds good by sanding down rough or jagged edges to prevent them from scratching paintwork or catching when lowering or raising them.

Replace the end bracket

How to Shorten Blind Cord Without Cutting

A long blind cord can be unsightly and overly complicated. Longer blind cords may not match your custom blind size and can get knotted or tangled, which could affect the blind’s functionality. Rather than use a Venetian blind cutter, though, it is possible to shorten the blind cord without cutting anything and still get the best results.

There are several options to consider without cutting blinds or the cord itself. Some people will knot the cord in a specific place, usually towards the bottom. However, even this is not always as attractive, especially in areas of the house that see a lot of visitors, such as the living room or kitchen.

Instead, you can use cord cleats. These accessories allow you to wrap the cord around them at the preferred location, which is the same place you would knot it. Although simple, this is an elegant solution and also allows you to use the full length at a later date if you move house or donate the blinds to a friend or family member.

How to Fix Broken Wooden Blinds

Broken blind slats can disrupt the tranquillity and convenience of your home, but it is not the end of the world if you encounter a broken blind. Indeed, it is just as beneficial to know how to fix broken wooden blinds as it is to know how to take down Venetian blinds for repairs or replacements.

Like cutting blinds, you can easily fix broken blinds.

Use the pliers to pick up the bottom slat and remove the plug.

Pull the cord through each blind until you arrive at the broken blind.

Remove the broken blind and be careful not to remove it too quickly, as it could tangle with other blinds and even damage surrounding blinds.

Do the reserve when installing the replacement blind. Ideally, you have spares ready, but if not, you can research faux wood blinds that match your existing blind style.

Feed the cord through the rest of the blinds and re-attach the plug to keep them in place.

In most cases, you may not even need to know how to take down Venetian blinds before you remove and repair broken window blinds. However, this usually depends on where the broken blind is located. Lower blinds are easier to remove, but any blinds further up the scale may require you to take the blinds down entirely to prevent any frustration or mistakes.

How to Take Slats Out of Blinds

If you know how to cut down a blind, you should also know how to take slats out of blinds. First, it’s useful to know why you would need to do this.

Mostly, removing slats permanently is done if the blinds hang too long or bunch up on the windowsill. Some people do not mind this, but others do. If you prefer a perfect fit for your blinds, removing slats is the best approach.

Keep the blinds installed and remove the plugs from the bottom. Here, you will find a knotted cord. Untie the knot to remove the base rail.

Carefully remove as many slats as you need by feeding the cord through the gaps. This could be just one slat, two slats, or even several.

Don’t forget that the base rail will also add some length to the blinds, so account for that when removing the slats.

When you have removed as many slats as required, replace the base rail and re-tie the knots. Once you have done this, put the plugs back on.

We recommend keeping the space slats in case of damage or if you move house and need to lengthen the blinds again to match the window size.

Custom Faux Wood Blinds

If you’re looking for high-quality custom length blinds, Wood Blinds has a variety of bespoke cut to size blinds for you to peruse.

Installing blinds in your home is one of the best ways to enhance the look of your windows. There are times when you may need to remove your blinds for a number of reasons.

When this happens you will need to ensure that you do so carefully to prevent damage. Here is a look at how you can remove blinds safely.

How to Remove Horizontal Window Blinds

Removing horizontal window blinds need not be a difficult task. Horizontal window blinds can be made from different types of material. Some of them are made from wood, others from faux wood or aluminum.

Fortunately, no matter what type of horizontal blinds you have most of them can be removed in the same way. Here are some steps that you can follow to remove the blinds quickly and safely.

Remove Valances

If you have valances then you need to remove them before you can do anything. Valances are usually mounted on a clip and then attached to a headrail. If you want to remove the valance all you have to do is lift off the blinds.

Once the valances have been taken off you will have access to the headrail as well as the mounting brackets. Brackets are usually placed at the end of each headrail.

You can open the brackets by lifting the side of the bracket that is hinged. Often a screwdriver will be needed to gently pry the hinge aside from off of the tab.

Once you get brackets open all you now have to do is remove the window blinds from their brackets. The brackets will now need to be removed from the window frame by taking out all the screws that had been holding them in place.

How to Remove Venetian Blinds

To remove Venetian blinds you are going to need a few tools. The method to take down your blinds can be different depending on the type of blinds that you have.

Blinds with standard brackets need to be taken down in a different way from those that have spring loaded brackets.

Before attempting to take down your blinds you need to make sure that you understand the type of brackets that they are in. Take a close look at them. If your brackets are held together by a clip over the front side of your blinds then they are what is known as standard. If you don’t notice this then they are almost always spring-loaded blinds.

The first step

The first thing you will need to do is to use the drawstrings under blinds to pull the blades all the way to the top.

You can use your hands to do this to ensure that the blades pull up and can be locked into position. Once you have gotten the blades to the top you are free to let go of a drawstring.

The second step

The second step in the process is where you will need a tool. You will need to have a screwdriver on hand to lift the bracket from each side of the blind.

If you’re trying to remove standard blinds then all you have to do is put the tip of the screwdriver between the clip area and the blind. Gently pull the screwdriver away from the blinds, the clips will be released and the brackets will open.

The third step

You will need to remove the blinds from the open bracket. Use both your hands to grab the blinds and gently pull them towards you. Once you have the brackets lifted, the blinds should be easy to slide out and so that they can be pulled away from the window.

The fourth step

For the fourth step, you are going to need a Phillips head drill bit. You will only be able to remove the brackets from the windows by using a drill.

You will need the drill to spin counterclockwise so you will have to press the reverse spin on it. After that, you will need to position your drill bit inside the head of one of the screws and turn on the drill.

Ensure that you safely store away the screws and the brackets in a safe place so that they do not get lost.

The fifth step

Remove the blind brackets with a Phillips head drill as well. You will need to set your drill to spin counterclockwise once again. Put the drill bit into the screw that connects the brackets to your window.

Turn on the drill and unscrew the bracket, once you have done this you can repeat it for the next bracket.

How to Remove Venetian Blinds to Clean Them

You can use the steps above to remove your Venetian blinds for cleaning. Remember to have your tools ready as well as the proper drill. Ensure that at all times you are holding on to any areas that are susceptible to falling.

Have a container or a plastic bag ready to collect screws and brackets so that you do not lose them. Once you have done this you can easily remove the Venetian blinds for cleaning.

Faux Wood Blinds are a great alternative to traditional wooden blinds. They look and feel like natural wood, but they don’t cost much or require any upkeep. You can enjoy all of the benefits that come with faux wood blinds without having to worry about them becoming damaged over time! This blog post will detail some reasons why you should buy faux wood blinds for your home instead of regular wooden ones.

What is the Difference Between Faux Wood and Natural Wood?

Faux wood blinds are made of polyethene; they have the same look and feel like natural wood without any problems. Real wooden blinds need maintenance every year or so to keep them looking great for years to come. These costs can add up quickly! Faux wood is easier to clean and maintain since it doesn’t require much attention as regular wooden ones do. You won’t ever have to worry about getting your hair stuck in between slats again with faux wood blinds because there aren’t any slats at all! With no moving parts, you don’t have anything that could get broken from use over time either.

Read more: Choosing Between Wood & Faux Wood Blinds

There’s a reason why many forget where their last set ended up once they get a new one because they don’t have gaps in between each slat! Wood effect blinds also don’t warp or shrink over time, so you know they’ll continue to look great for years and years without any problems. Faux wood venetian blinds are a perfect alternative to traditional wooden ones! They have the same benefits as regular wooden blinds while removing many of the downsides associated with them.

Different Colours and Variations of Faux Wood Blinds

Let’s say you want to change your faux wood blinds colours, no problem! You can choose from a vast variety of different colours and styles – there is one for every taste. If you need something specific but don’t see it on our site, just let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll be happy to help find it if possible! Bespoke blinds are an easy way to bring new life into any room in your home without spending too much money or time doing so. We have many great options that go with many decors, including modern, rustic, traditional etc. The possibilities are endless for matching them up with other decor elements in the same space. They also fit specific window types, including bay windows and more!

Read more: How to Choose your Wood Blind Colour

Some rooms in your home don’t benefit from a light and airy look, but instead, they need to be closed off completely! Faux wood blinds are perfect for this type of room because they can block out any unwanted outside elements when you close the slats together at night or when it’s bright out. This is especially important for your bedroom, which should always be a calming place where you can relax and recharge after a long day at work. Blinds also come in handy during certain times of the year, like summer and winter! They can create a barrier between your rooms and the outside world during the summer to keep your air conditioned rooms more relaxed. During the winter, they can block out cold drafts from coming through open windows or doors! You’ll also want them for any room with a fireplace since it’s best not to have direct heat on furniture and flooring materials, but you still need some warmth there, especially if someone in your family tends to get cold quickly.

The Benefits of Using Faux Blinds

Faux wood blinds are a fantastic alternative to traditional wooden ones. They provide many of the same benefits without any upkeep or damage that comes with regular wooden blinds. So if you’re looking for something different and want all of these benefits, faux wood blinds can be an excellent choice! In addition, Faux Wood Blinds aren’t just used in homes; they also make great window coverings at your place of business since they don’t require much attention and can block out unwanted elements like sunlight or wind while still allowing some light through them during the daytime hours. This is especially important if your office has lots of windows because natural light provides employees with more energy throughout their workdays – research shows this helps increase productivity, so it’s worth looking into. Plus, it’s always good to do your part in protecting the environment!

Faux Wood Blind Ideas

Faux Wood Blinds are excellent options if your home has lots of large windows. They can make a room feel more spacious and open by allowing plenty of sunlight while still maintaining the privacy that everyone wants from their living space. You’ll also want to consider using them when decorating around fireplaces because they provide insulation without making it too hot inside since the slats allow some heat to escape through them during colder seasons. Faux Wood Blinds add style and character into any room in your house, whether big or small, which is why many people choose this option over traditional wooden blinds – which change isn’t good every once in a while?

Read more: How To Clean Faux Wood Blinds

Finally, Faux Wood Blinds are an excellent way to block out annoying light during the day or night. It can be difficult enough for some people to fall asleep at night with all of that natural sunlight coming through their windows; faux wood blinds make it much easier by blocking them out completely! Plus, they’re also great if you live in an area where there is a lot of outside noise like traffic and construction since they don’t let any sound come into your living space which makes getting restful sleep so much more possible. In addition, these days everyone has busy schedules between work and family life that many times leaves no time whatsoever to sit down after a long day and relax – but if one room in your home could be a calm and soothing place to go, the bedroom should always be it.

Venetian blinds are an excellent addition to any home, adding a sense of style that can’t be replicated. They’re one of the most popular types of blinds out there, but how much will it cost to install them in your home? The answer to this is more complex than it seems as there are different factors that play into the price – such as the type of Venetian blinds and the size of your windows.

Don’t worry, all the prices will be made easier to understand as you read through this buyer’s guide:

How Much do Wood Venetian Blinds Cost?

Primarily, the cost of wood Venetian blinds is going to depend on the size of your windows – along with the size of the slats. Most Venetian blinds come in slat widths of either 35mm or 50mm. Additionally, the type of wood used will have a big impact on the price. At Wood Blinds, we have two different options to choose from:

Faux wood

Sun wood

The faux wood blinds start from £25.81 and are available in a series of different designs and colours to suit your home.

The sun wood blinds are slightly more expensive given they have a more premium look and feel to them. They begin at £30.03 and also have plenty of different colours for you to choose from.

Of course, these are the base prices for the blinds – the true cost of them will vary based on how big your windows are. Typically, most UK windows can be found in the following sizes:

500 x 1200

1000 x 1200

1500 x 1200

2000 x 1200

2500 x 1200

By taking our faux wood blinds, we can provide you with average prices for each of these window sizes:

500 x 1200: £27.87

1000 x 1200: £45.65

1500 x 1200: £63.60

2000 x 1200: £89.27

2500 x 1200: £112.12

Please note, the prices stay the same regardless of slat width, so you can choose your faux wood blinds in either 35mm or 50mm and pay the same.

With our sun wood collection, the prices are as follows:

500 x 1200: £33.21

1000 x 1200: £58.13

1500 x 1200: £83.02

2000 x 1200: £130.80

2500 x 1200: £139.52

All of our sun wood collection are only available in 50mm slat width, so keep that in mind when ordering.

Furthermore, please be aware that this is for the cost of the blinds only, not for installation. If you want the blinds to be installed for you, you will need to hire a company to do that. There’s also a £7.95 delivery fee to add to your order.

Things to Consider When Purchasing Wood Blinds

What do you need to know before buying your wood Venetian blinds? Apart from the average costs, these are some other things to consider:

Size

Here, you need to consider the size in terms of the slat width and how big the blinds need to be to fit your windows. We’ve provided some estimates for the average window sizes in the UK, but your best bet is to measure your windows themselves. Ensure you have an accurate reading, then input the details into the size boxes when ordering your blinds. Be sure to select the correct measurements – if you measured in mm, don’t accidentally put the numbers under cm, or you’ll get some massive blinds that are very expensive.

Tapes

Tapes are an optional addition to add to your Venetian blinds. All of the prices listed above do not include tape. You can select a specific colour of tape to apply to your blinds, and they run vertically over the internal strings. This is a great way to cover up the strings and make the blinds look neater, and they can also add a nice contrast when displayed next to the wood.

Faux Wood Blinds Colours

Of course, you need to think long and hard about the colour of your faux wood Venetian blinds. The choice is entirely up to you, and it depends on your interior design. Pick blind colours that complement your interior spaces and add something special to the home decor. Also, consider staining; white blinds look nice but are more susceptible to stains and can be harder to keep clean. Also Check: How to Choose your Wood Blind Colour

Location

Where are you going to place your blinds? Ultimately, this plays a role in determining both the size and the colour of your Venetian blinds.

Quality

Lastly, always be sure that you purchase Venetian blinds from a quality supplier. The wood or faux wood needs to be of very high quality to ensure that it lasts without deteriorating. You can find extremely cheap Venetian blinds out there, but the quality is so low that it doesn’t make sense to even consider them.

How to fit Venetian Blinds

Thankfully, fitting Venetian blinds is relatively simple and requires almost zero DIY experience to do. Once you have measured your windows and bought the correct blinds for them, they will arrive packaged and ready to fit.

From here, follow these simple steps:

Place the blinds against the window and mark where you are going to mount the brackets

Drill holes into your markings and insert the wall plugs that came with your blinds

Place the bracket over the holes and use a screwdriver to screw the blinds into the wall plugs

The bracket will have little levers that you can move, and ensure they are in their open position while fitting the top rail of the blind to the brackets

Turn the leavers into the closed position to snap them in place and keep the rail attached

Attach the wand that comes with it so you can alter the openness of the blinds

Drill two holes in the wall to position the safety cleat, then screw it into place, wrapping the cord around it

Just like that, you’ve got a new set of Venetian blinds installed in your home!

Are you thinking about getting wood blinds for your home? If you are, then you need to be aware that there are a number of different colours available. You need to choose the one that is going to fit in the home the best, and within the room that you are currently changing up. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at how you can choose your wood blind colour, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more about this.

10 Tips on Choosing the Right Colour for your Blinds

1. Choose a Contrasting Colour

Our first tip is that you should choose a contrasting colour to the rest of the room. For example, if your room is largely white or magnolia, there are plenty of options for you here. A dark blue might look fantastic, or maybe a purple. Pick one of your favourite colours, and go from there.

2. Lighter Makes the Room Appear Bigger

The lighter the colour, the bigger the room is going to appear. It lets the light in and enhances the space simply by letting the light through.

3. Match it to the Trim of the Window

If you have a trim on your window, then you could match your blind colour to that. At the very least, you know that your entire room is going to match rather than your blinds looking a little out of place. As such, if you match the blind colour to the trim, you’re going to have a beautiful space.

4. Speak to a Professional

If you’re really not sure about how to choose the right colour, and you don’t trust yourself to do so, then you can always consult a professional. They will be able to help you choose a fantastic colour that matches your home and brings you a beautiful look. Ask questions so next time, you know what you are doing.

5. Match it to your Wall Colour

A lot of people simply choose to match their blinds to their wall colour. It’s simple, it matches and makes the home look great. It doesn’t take long as you already know what colour you’re going for, so if you want a simple solution, this is it.

6. Consider the Flooring in the Room

Some people forget all about the flooring in a room when they are picking their blinds. The problem with this is that when the blinds clash with the floor, it’s noticeable and not in a good way. In fact, if the clash is bad, it has the ability to throw the entire room of balance, leaving you with something that doesn’t look great. The likely outcome of this is that you will change your blinds again, spending more money than necessary.

7. Think about the other Features in the Room

What other features are in the room? Do you have wooden features in your home? If so, you can opt for a wood colour for your blinds. Soft browns and beige colours might not be all that common, but they can really do wonders to a room.

8. Be Bold

If you want to go for a modern look, then you want to be bold. Don’t be worried about the brightness or boldness of the colour you are choosing, if you think it goes with the existing room, go for it. Most modern homes have bold blinds to give the home that little something extra, so it’s something that you can do too.

9. Don’t use too many Colours

Ideally, you don’t want to be using too many colours in one room and this is something that you have got to be conscious about. If you can, we recommend that you don’t use more than three colours in any given room as there will be too much going on if you do. If you already have a range of colours in the room that you are adding the blinds too, choose one of the existing ones to match it to.

10. White is Always a Good Choice

White is always a fantastic choice for blinds, as long as you don’t have little sticky fingers in your home that will be determined to ruin them. Of course, they are going to need cleaning regularly, but they look fantastic, go with almost everything, and let the light in to enhance the space. You really get everything when you choose white.

The last thing you want is to dash off shopping for blinds for your windows only to realise that you got the measurements all wrong! Also, it is pretty easy to assume that you can identify the right blind size for your windows by looking at them. To avoid the frustration of coming home with the wrong blind size, you need to ensure that you take the correct measurement before you set off.

Before anything else, there are some things you first need to pay attention to before you go shopping for blinds. Instead, be sure of where the blinds will go. This involves identifying if your window space has a recess. Also, find out whether your blinds will go outside or inside the space. In addition, you must be sure that there are no obstacles in the way of fully extending your blinds. For example, you should look out for fixtures, electric sockets, protruding handles, etc.

If you’re looking for the perfect fit, you should aim for a deep window recess, as that will provide more than enough space for the blinds to fit perfectly inside.

What Does Recess Mean in Blinds?

As mentioned earlier, you can choose whether you want to have your blinds inside or outside of the window recess. But, what is meant by a “recess”? A recess is when you opt to fit your blinds on the inside space. There is no need to make any further adjustments to make extra room for the fittings, as this should happen automatically upon ordering for a recess blind. You can apply this to almost every type of blind.

Read also: What Types of Blinds Can I Buy

Recess blinds are designed to fit neatly inside the window opening itself, compared to the exact blinds that sit outside of the window recess in a way that makes them overlap the window boundaries by some margin on either side. You need to take the time to measure for the exact blinds, as that will make sure you get the perfect fit. The right blinds measurement also means that you wouldn’t have to deal with light rays escaping through the sides of the blinds or finding it difficult to get the ends to fit into the window space. Again, as mentioned earlier, you need to look out for any obstacle that may make this unsafe or dangerous.

How to Measure Your Window for Recess Blind Fit

You can follow these steps to get the perfect measurement for fitting blinds inside the recess.

Step one: Measure the Blind Width Sizes

Start by lining your take measure as steadily and carefully as possible, and record the distance from the left to the right within your recess walls. Once done, repeat the process for the three other places, including the top of your recess, to ensure that you have an accurate measurement. Now record the shortest length for your width measurement.

Step two: Measure the Blind Length

To measure your blind length, use the same approach with your tape measure from the top side of the recess down to the windowsill at three points. Once done, record or write down the measurement for the narrowest point. The shortest measurement you take will be your recess drop. If you have vertical blinds, a better option will be to reduce your length by about one centimetre. Doing this will help ensure that your fabric does not catch on the windowsill.
Once done, your length measurement, together with the figure you had for your width, will be your recess blind sizes.

How to Measure Windows for Blinds

Getting the exact blind fit means that you maximise the total size of your finished blind, including your rails, brackets, etc. here is how to measure for blinds. Start by measuring the width area you want your blinds to cover, leaving space for the overlap on either side of the window. For the best results, leaving approximately 6.5 centimetres of overlap space on either side should be enough. You might also want to know that the further past your window opening you measure, the more effectively you will restrict light rays escaping from the sides.

Read also: How To Clean Faux Wood Blinds

The next step is to measure the drop. That should be less difficult, as all you need to do is measure the full drop space you want your blinds to cover. You might also want to include the top fitting and your preferred overlap space above and below the opening of your window. If you have any source of obstruction like radiators, be sure to make enough room for them.

At the end of this step, you should have the exact measurements for your blind fit, including enough allowances. Now, you’re ready to make your blinds order to size – remember to emphasise “exact” blind fit.

How to Fit Blinds

So, you have gone through all your blind measurements and made your purchase. It’s now time for some more hard work – putting up blinds.

First, you need to decide on whether you want a face fit or a top fix. With a face fix, your brackets go to the window frame, with your blinds outside recess and overlapping your wall. This blocks any light from escaping. With a top fix, you will hang your blinds within the recess, creating a snug and streamlined fit while allowing you to save space. Your preferred fit should depend on factors like how much space you have, the kind of blinds you choose, and your style.

The second thing you need to do is screw your bracket into your wall. Once done, install your preferred blinds onto your brackets and attach the safety device it comes with. There! You’re all set!

If you want to fit your blinds without using recess space, you can opt for an allowance of about 6 centimetres overlapping on both sides of your window when measuring for blinds. You can also add an extra space of about 10 centimetres of blind lengths, as this will ensure that you get the best performance from it.
